First Impressions – More Maison Crivelli – Hibiscus & Patchouli.

I was ready to write off the French house based on my samplings of their earlier scents. You’ll find my first impressions of some of their line in a separate post a couple of months back. Most were pretty ordinary, especially the iris. I was still writing them off after I tried their hibiscus scent, but their wonderful patchouli extrait may have brought me around. So let’s look at them both in today’s blog post.

Maison Crivelli – Hibiscus Mahajád – This is the first extrait from the house. Quentin Bisch is the perfumer. I recognise his style here. The similarities to his Delina Exclusif for Parfums de Marly are evident. Like that one, Hibiscus Mahajád becomes a cloying, overly sweet concoction of rose and vanilla. Any notes or accords, such as leather, cinnamon, or the hibiscus that might have added some contrast, end up buried in the syrupy goop of the dominant sweet notes. Of course, it lasts forever, pushing out for more than 10 hours. From what I can gather, it seems to have found many fans. Each to their own, I guess.

Maison Crivelli – Patchouli Magnetik – In contrast, Patchouli Magnetik seems to have found many haters. I think this one is great. Go figure. The brand was looking to mimic a motorcycle ride through patchouli fields during a tropical storm for this 2022 release. Quentin Bisch, again the perfumer. It’s a good un.

My word, it’s strong, though. The 33 percent concentration is a real hit to the senses. One spray and you’re all set for the day, it seems. The patchouli is the dominant note, and there’s an undeniable wet earthiness to Patchouli Magnetik. However, the supporting notes provide for a thrilling ride. Indeed, I can imagine making my way through a patchouli field on a warm, hot day.

Creamy, milky undertones of gardenia, peach, and sandalwood give the fragrance an almost humid, balmy tropical vibe. The vanilla and benzoin add to that effect, with the scent almost bordering on milky chocolate. But, of course, the patchouli could be sending it in that chocolate direction too. Warm and inviting, and I must say a pleasant surprise after what I had tried previously from the house.

This patchouli is warm and somewhat tropical. This image feels representative of it.

Have you tried these two scents yet?
