I make a point of keeping up to date with the Aqua Allegoria (AA) launches. Guerlain doesn’t make it easy, though. There’s been plenty of new fragrances and collections coming off the production line in recent years from the famed French house. I find it challenging to keep pace, not to mention confusing. In 2022, they extended the AA collection further by adding the “Harvest and “Forte” lines. And they’ve transferred their Middle Eastern-inspired range into the similar-shaped bee-bottles, naming them Absolus Allegoria. It’s baffling stuff for this scented simpleton.
Anyway, back to the Aqua Allegoria, I own two of the well-known fragrances from the line, Pamplelune and Herba Fresca. The last one I truly enjoyed was Nerolia Vetiver. Last year’s release, Florabloom, fell flat. This year’s release, by Delphine Jelk, is called Rosa Verde.
Rosa Verde contains rose and mint, but it’s not another variant of Herba Fresca or even another version of Rosa Rossa. Instead, this new fragrance features a quite prominent cucumber facet. Cucumber isn’t usually a note that gets experienced fragrance enthusiasts sitting up and taking notice, but in Rosa Verde, it’s not weak, wan, or watery. It’s quite vegetal and interesting, and gives the impression of refined elegance, like a day on the green enjoying the finer things in life. A garden party complete with cucumber sandwiches and refreshing tonics.
I do get the rose and mint, but certainly more rose than mint. The rose doesn’t smell jammy or sweet. It’s not a deep crimson rose, but a white or lightly coloured rose. Fortunately, the mint doesn’t evoke any associations with toothpaste. There’s a hint of fruitiness from pear, but little sweetness from any of the notes.
After about an hour, Rosa Verde behaves more like a throwback green chypre. There’s a hint of powder from iris, but it’s the mossy/patchouli base that comes as a surprise. It certainly gives this Aqua Allegoria a strong framework and foundation. It might be a simple fragrance, but it never falls apart or becomes too thin. During the drydown, there’s more than a passing resemblance to Deauville from Chanel.
However, I draw parallels most closely with the green, rosy rooftop garden, Un Jardin Sur Le Toit from Hermès. Rosa Verde exudes a similar, undemanding, easy-paced charm. However, rather than a stroll through a fruit orchard, I’m hobnobbing with the rich and famous on a perfectly manicured green lawn as the birds play in fountains and the roses fragrance the air. My transition to a swanky scented simpleton is complete. Rosa Verde marks a much-welcome return to form for the affable Aqua Allegoria series. Nice work.
