Guerlain – Rosa Verde – A Chic Summer Garden Party

I make a point of keeping up to date with the Aqua Allegoria (AA) launches. Guerlain doesn’t make it easy, though. There’s been plenty of new fragrances and collections coming off the production line in recent years from the famed French house. I find it challenging to keep pace, not to mention confusing. In 2022, they extended the AA collection further by adding the “Harvest and “Forte” lines. And they’ve transferred their Middle Eastern-inspired range into the similar-shaped bee-bottles, naming them Absolus Allegoria. It’s baffling stuff for this scented simpleton.

My two bottles from the Aqua Allegoria.

Anyway, back to the Aqua Allegoria, I own two of the well-known fragrances from the line, Pamplelune and Herba Fresca. The last one I truly enjoyed was Nerolia Vetiver. Last year’s release, Florabloom, fell flat. This year’s release, by Delphine Jelk, is called Rosa Verde.

This rose from Guerlain has some character.

Rosa Verde contains rose and mint, but it’s not another variant of Herba Fresca or even another version of Rosa Rossa. Instead, this new fragrance features a quite prominent cucumber facet. Cucumber isn’t usually a note that gets experienced fragrance enthusiasts sitting up and taking notice, but in Rosa Verde, it’s not weak, wan, or watery. It’s quite vegetal and interesting, and gives the impression of refined elegance, like a day on the green enjoying the finer things in life. A garden party complete with cucumber sandwiches and refreshing tonics.

There’s plenty of green to back the rose in Rosa Verde.

I do get the rose and mint, but certainly more rose than mint. The rose doesn’t smell jammy or sweet. It’s not a deep crimson rose, but a white or lightly coloured rose. Fortunately, the mint doesn’t evoke any associations with toothpaste. There’s a hint of fruitiness from pear, but little sweetness from any of the notes.

Summer celebrations.

After about an hour, Rosa Verde behaves more like a throwback green chypre. There’s a hint of powder from iris, but it’s the mossy/patchouli base that comes as a surprise. It certainly gives this Aqua Allegoria a strong framework and foundation. It might be a simple fragrance, but it never falls apart or becomes too thin. During the drydown, there’s more than a passing resemblance to Deauville from Chanel.

Verdant green.

However, I draw parallels most closely with the green, rosy rooftop garden, Un Jardin Sur Le Toit from Hermès. Rosa Verde exudes a similar, undemanding, easy-paced charm. However, rather than a stroll through a fruit orchard, I’m hobnobbing with the rich and famous on a perfectly manicured green lawn as the birds play in fountains and the roses fragrance the air. My transition to a swanky scented simpleton is complete. Rosa Verde marks a much-welcome return to form for the affable Aqua Allegoria series. Nice work.

Un Jardin Sur Le Toit reminds me of Rosa Verde.

Do you have a favourite Aqua Allegoria? Have you tried Rosa Verde?

Note: Rosa Verde tested in store. All images are my own, other than the Rosa Verde bottle image, which comes from Guerlain.

  1. You’re certainly ahead of me in keeping track of the AAs, although I haven’t really tried! I remember liking Rosa Rossa and the Salvia one with a blackcurrant note. Your description made me think of Paul Smith Rose, which also has green tinges of green tea, or London by Gallivant, but I’m not sure if they would be fair comparisons – they don’t exactly evoke a garden party!

    1. Maybe to an extent there are similarities with these fragrances, Nose Prose. The Paul Smith Rose reminded me a little of Rosa Rossa. The Gallivant had that distinct leather facet in addition to the green ozonic notes.

  2. Great review, Daniel. Your mention of the cucumber note in Rosa Verde has piqued my interest. Cucumber has always been one of those notes that seems unnecessary, unclear, and most often undetectable. I’m glad you feel Guerlain’s use here is noticeable and purposeful. However, when all is said and done, I’d rather enjoy a nice, cool cucumber sandwich on the patio.

My favorite Aqua Allegoria is Orange Soleia.

    1. Thanks very much, Flaconneur. Yes, the cucumber note is quite prominent here. The cool cucumber sandwich on the patio sounds like a good idea. I remember enjoying that AA too.

  3. Great review Daniel 👏🏻, although doesn’t sound like my cup of tea as I’m not a fan of cucumber notes. And yes very confusing what they’ve doing with this line, it just doesn’t make any sense to combine their lightest (aquas) and their heaviest (absolus) scents into one range. Guerlain may produce some of the best fragrances, but they have some of the strangest marketing 😃.

    1. Thanks very much, Marcus. Yes, it’s very odd. I know they’re essentially different lines, but they’re very hard to differentiate. The department store that stocks Guerlain here includes the Aquas and the Absolus on the same shelf making for a strange mix of scent profiles.

  4. I’m late to this garden party. Roses perform best for me with a touch of verdancy, though cucumber notes often read too watery for my personal taste. This review has given me food for thought & I very much want to try Rosa Verde.
Pamplelune & Lys Soleia are my favourite AAs but my most complimented is Orange Soleia

    1. Yes, certainly worth a try, Alityke. It does have mint, and I recall you aren’t a fan of the note. Though, I find it’s third on the pecking order of the notes here and not as strident as Herbal Fresca, but still it’s there

  5. I want to be invited to this chic garden party. A scented simpleton? Ha! Ha! As if. Your great post reminds me I need to do a major catch-up on this range asap.
