Due to the current global pandemic many of us find ourselves at home, so I thought for today’s blog post I might discuss some of my favourite products / brands for scenting our homes.
Lola James Harper
A US brand that was founded in 2013 by photographer Rami Mekdachi. The brand produces a range of scents, room sprays and candles housed in brown glass bottles. Lola James Harper creates fragrances based on places they love. Their wide ranging selection of room sprays recalls vinyl stores, rainy days, movie theatres, fun fairs and spring days. One of my favourites is The Coffee Shop of J.P which is based on the aroma of a coffee shop where a group of friends gather after playing street basketball on a lazy weekend. The scent features notes of sandalwood and coffee with hints of cardamom and cinnamon. Do check them out as they have a wonderful range that suits all tastes.
Miller et Bertaux
One of my favourite underrated fragrance houses is Miller et Bertaux, and their range also includes a list of cosy scented candles that evokes various locations such as In The 80’s which is a floral scented candle of tuberose, iris and lily which transports you straight to a superior suite of a grand hotel in the 1980’s. They have an herbal candle called In The Garden that features notes of thyme, peppermint and rhubarb. I own a candle from the brand called In India that evokes the spice markets of India.
Santa Maria Novella
One of the oldest pharmacies in the world, located in Florence, and opened in 1612 the brand took the ancient formulas of the Dominican friars to create their range of perfumes, body products and home fragrances. Their range of home fragrances covers everything from potpourri to wax tablets for closets and drawers and incense sticks that are perfect for all seasons. One of my favourite scents of Santa Maria Novella is the vanilla and tobacco infused Tobacco Toscana and the candle featuring the scent is a superb accompaniment to a cool winter night.
Cire Trudon
Founded in 1643 and one of the oldest candle makers in the world. Their initial line of scents released in 2017 was excellent, but it’s their candles and room sprays they are most famous for. My favourite room spray is Ernesto which transports you into a hotel in Havana under the sun with the aroma of cigars and rum in the air. Another favourite is Dada which features notes of mint, eucalyptus and tea and works perfectly for balmy summer evenings. It’s fair to say their candles are unrivalled.
Urban Apothecary
British brand founded by Tajinder Banwait. Taking her inspiration from aromatic botanicals spilling out from glass jars and bottles in her kitchen she set about creating a lifestyle brand that would capture memories from the past and special moments in her life. The range includes candles, diffusers and soaps. My favourite scent from the brand is Coconut Grove which evokes island hopping in tropical locales in the Indian Ocean. The fragrance features notes of coconut, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and citruses. Their scent diffusers are hand poured in England by artisans and are housed in mouth blown glass.
Aesop
One of my favourite Australian brands is Aesop which was established in Melbourne in 1987. Fusing plant-based botanicals and laboratory based ingredients Aesop produces a range of skin care, hair care and fragrances that have a distinctly natural and earthy aroma. Their range of room sprays is excellent and can be adjusted to all moods and seasons. Istros is a smoky floral scent with tobacco and lavender, Cythera features geranium, incense and patchouli and Olous is clean and fresh with notes of galbanum, grapefruit and jasmine. They can be purchased alone (100ml) or in a handy pack of three x 50ml.
The Laundress New York
Here’s a wildcard. Laundry products. The brainchild of Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Boyd, The Laundress features a series of eco-friendly cleaning products derived from plants and free of all toxins. Their highly concentrated products come with the promise of “more clean for the money”. Now, having used their signature detergent on my gnarly construction uniform I can safely say it works. Smells good too; Think clean laundry smell, though this is a natural smelling lily of the valley, jasmine and musk scent that is a notch above your average supermarket brand.
Esteban Paris Parfums
Another company using the inspiration of travel and sensory memories to create home fragrances. Esteban Paris have been around for 35 years so they know a thing or two. Teck & Tonka is their best seller and it conjures up the scent of exotic Africa. Cinnamon, nutmeg, sandalwood and patchouli sit on a base of amber and tonka, making it a perfect winter warmer. All their scents which include an amber, white orchid and fig come in diffusers, candles and room sprays and they even have ceramic lucky charms that use oil and can be hung up and used to scent your wardrobe or car.
Christian Tortu
Parisian based florist Christian Tortu creates fragrances for the home evoking the great outdoors. The scents of forests, orchards and garden in his room sprays and candles bring the outside in. My favourite is the forets scent which features notes of pine, cistus, cedar and freshly cut grass. It’s available in room spray, candle, hand soap, pot pourri and diffuser.
Carriere Freres
Created by two brothers following the Industrial Revolution Carriere Freres creates candles that capture the essence of botanical plants. Their candles are manufactured in the Cire Trudon factory. My favourite candle is undoubtedly the spearmint, a beautiful natural mint scent that cuts through the warmest of days. Like most of the brands I’ve listed they also do room sprays and diffusers.
So there you have it, a few of my favourite home scenting ideas to keep your castle well scented in any season.
Do you use candles, room sprays or diffusers to scent your home? What are your favourites?
Note : I am not affiliated with any of these brands, and opinions are all my own.
