First Impressions – Creed Aventus Cologne

Aventus Cologne Creed for men

It’s always an event when Creed releases a new fragrance. When Creed Aventus was released in 2010, it quickly became an iconic men’s fragrance. A smoky, pineapple, musky scent that has been dubbed “The King”. A fragrance that became the de rigueur in every man’s fragrance wardrobe. A must have niche scent for collectors and even the most casual enthusiast. Personally, I like the fragrance, but do not love it. To be honest, I think it’s a tad overrated, and certainly not my favourite Creed. Fast forward six years and Creed released a women’s version, a musky apple, blackcurrant fragrance that hasn’t received anywhere near as much fanfare as it’s male counterpart. Perhaps it’s a somewhat forgotten release in the Creed back catalogue.

I first heard rumblings that Creed were going to release a Cologne version of Aventus back in 2018. A year on, and I finally got my hands on a sample of the fragrance and have been wearing it over the last few days. So, is it any good? Well to be honest, no. Especially for the price. There’s a melange of fruits in the top notes including the ubiquitous pineapple, dumbed down here in a veritable fruit salad that includes notes of apple, mint and mandarin. The fruitiness kind of subsides 20 minutes in, but hovers in the background as musk and birch take hold. It’s neither smoke nor fruit dominant, instead remaining in a state of limbo.

It reminds me of two designer fragrances, Chanel Allure Homme Sport and Versace Pour Homme, both pleasant enough, but for the kind of cash Creed expect you to splash out, pleasant is not good enough. In fact, you may as well pay the extra 10-20 dollars and buy Aventus or save yourself some cash and buy the far superior Green Irish Tweed, or even pick up the Chanel or Versace.

No one will recoil away in horror when you wear this, but they’ll probably think you’re wearing a sports cologne you bought for around 100 dollars or less. Creed Aventus Cologne lasted 4-5 hours on my skin. Bear in mind, that’s from a sample, so full bottle testing should increase that longevity. It isn’t particularly regal though, and I have to say this Aventus is more of a peasant than a king.

What are your thoughts on this release?

  1. Nice review! Very expensive to smell like any other sport cologne that lasts 3 hours….
